Rained Out in Moab

Moab Area Rock Art XX | Saturday, January 21, 2012

I was up at 4am this morning so that I could make it to Marlboro Point before sunrise. With storms moving through the area, I was hoping for a colorful and dramatic sunrise…and I wasn’t let down! As I drove out onto the point, the eastern sky started to turn a dark pink on the horizon and I could tell that things were going to be good, so I hurried out to the end of the road. Shortly after reaching the overlook and setting up my camera the light show really started. The light shining on the cliffs to the right only lasted for a few seconds and I was glad to capture the moment in time.

San Rafael Desert Loop

Saturday, October 23, 2010

On Saturday morning Amanda and I headed to Green River to follow the San Rafael Desert Loop. With all the rain the area had received lately we were a little worried about the condition of the roads in the area, but we lucked out and most of them were in good shape. As we made our way south from Green River the roads were a bit muddy from the recent rains, but not too bad. We did come across an abandoned camper on a muddy hill that someone couldn’t get out. The further south we got from Green River, the drier the roads were. Our first destination was the old Chaffin Ranch to see the cold water geyser. We hung around until it started to spout water.

Moab Arches and Rock Art

Southern Utah Wanderings 2010 | Day 5
Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Wednesday…another day and another morning of waiting in the tent until the rain stopped. Luckily, once it stopped, the sky actually started to clear up and the sun came out as we were packing up camp. From camp we headed down the Colorado River to the trailhead for Corona Arch. This hike was on my to-do list for this year and I was planning on hiking it in November, but since we were here unexpectedly I figured it would be a good time to check it out. Our goals for this day would be to find some arches, petroglyphs and pictographs near Moab that we usually bypass on our way to other destinations.

Willow Gulch

Southern Utah Wanderings 2010 | Day 3
Monday, October 4, 2010

Monday morning we woke up to rain. We had a quick breakfast inside the Jeep to stay dry. The sky to the south looked clear, so we headed in that direction to hike down Willow Gulch to Broken Bow Arch. When we arrived at the Willow Gulch trailhead we got lucky and the sky was indeed clear here with the sun shining….so we grabbed our backpacks and headed down canyon.
