Today Amanda and I went up on the Uncompahgre Plateau to do a little exploring. Last year I had driven across the plateau on it’s main road (Divide Road), so this time we started checking out some of the 4WD roads on the northeast corner of the plateau.

Unfortunately since Amanda has to work on the holiday, we only had a normal weekend to go exploring, but we managed to make the most of it. After heading out after work and driving straight through to Blanding, where we filled up with gas, we made it to Comb Wash campground and managed to setup camp right before it started raining. We knew there might be a chance of rain, but it actually ended up raining all night….and pretty hard, too.

Even with the lack of sleep the previous night, I got an early start the next day. I started off heading up to the ghost town of St. Elmo, which is very cool to check out and well preserved. My understanding is that it can get rather crowded during the summer, but with my early start, I must have beat the crowds.

Day 0: The Beginning
Near the end of 2006 I had the idea to take a two week trip through Colorado, Utah and then into Wyoming & South Dakota staying off the pavement as much as I could. I decided to plan the trip for the end of July and early August so that all of the high passes in Colorado would be open. There was only one problem at that point; I didn’t have a Jeep capable of pulling off the trip. The Cherokee I had at the time, had become a dedicated rockcrawler and was no way capable of driving a couple thousand miles without being pulled on a trailer. That is not what I wanted to do on this trip.
