Potsherds & Petroglyphs from the Painted Desert

Thursday – Saturday, April 16-18, 2026

After spending a full week below the rim in the Grand Canyon we returned to Flagstaff for a night before we planned to drive over to Petrified Forest National Park and the surrounding Palavayu area to spend a couple of days before heading home. Unfortunately, things would not go quite as planned because my right eye started to hurt really bad and bother me overnight and I ended up having to go to Urgent Care on Friday morning where I found out that I had a scratched cornea and wouldn’t be able to wear my contacts for a few days. It’s not surprising based on how much blowing sand we encountered in the canyon, but I am really glad that I didn’t have any issues with my eye while we were still in the canyon because that would not have been fun!

Petroglyphs of the Petrified Forest

A Return to Petrified Forest National Park
Sunday & Monday, May 16-17, 2021

After an amazing Saturday checking out the ruins and rock art of the Ute Mountain Tribal Park we were now planning on spending the next two days digging deeper into the backcountry of Petrified Forest National Park. We had such a great time exploring the Petrified Forest last February that we couldn’t wait to get back for some more! Of course, we would have preferred to come back earlier in the year when it’s a bit cooler out and less crowded, but this would probably be our only opportunity this year, so we jumped at it. Since the park does not open until 8:00am we had time for breakfast in Holbrook before heading to the southern entrance of the park and arrived just a few minutes before they opened for the day.
