Junes Bottom & Moonshine Wash

Edges of the Labyrinth Canyon Wilderness | Friday – Sunday, November 21-23, 2025

This weekend I didn’t want to stray too far from home but I also wanted to go somewhere where I knew the roads would be OK since we had a week full of wet stormy weather across the Colorado Plateau, so I decided to return to the Labyrinth Canyon Wilderness for the third time this year since there are still a number of hikes I want to do in the area. My main objective was to hike down to Junes Bottom since it’s been on my to-do list for a long time and I have never had the opportunity to stop there while on a river trip through Labyrinth Canyon yet. I left from work on Friday afternoon, got fuel in Green River and then made my way south to the rim above the Trin-Alcove Bend which is where I planned to watch the sunset and then spend the night.

Keg Point and the Labyrinth Canyon Wilderness

Labyrinth Canyon Wilderness | Friday – Sunday, April 18-20, 2025

After spending last week in Arizona and then driving up to Salt Lake City in the middle of this past week to attend a concert on Wednesday evening I had fully intended to take this weekend off to stay home and relax for the first time this year, but Diane was going to be working nights this weekend and she wanted me out of the house so she could get some rest in between shifts. I quickly threw together a last minute itinerary and left after work on Friday afternoon to spend the weekend exploring the Labyrinth Canyon Wilderness on the west side of the Green River where I could go on some hikes that I’ve wanted to do for a long time but have kept putting off. I was hoping this area wouldn’t be too busy over the Easter holiday weekend and thankfully that turned out to be a good bet!

San Rafael Desert

Monday, January 2, 2017

Since I stayed close to home the past two days, I decided that wanted to venture over the state line into Utah today, but I still didn’t want to travel too far. It’s a pretty short and easy drive from Grand Junction to Green River, so I thought I’d head south from there on the Green River Road to revisit some sites I haven’t been to in many years and also try to stop at a few new ones. I contacted Marty on Saturday evening to see if he was free, and then we made plans to meet in Green River at 7:30 this morning. As I was getting close to Green River on I-70 I could see that the Gunnison Valley was filled with a thick fog and I thought that this might make things interesting for us. After meeting up with Marty and topping off my fuel tank we headed south into the fog on the Green River Road.

Moonshine Wash

Saturday, April 4, 2015

Today I headed back into Utah so I could visit Moonshine Wash in the San Rafael Desert which has been on my list of places to visit for way too long, especially since it’s not too far away from home! Moonshine Wash received it’s name from the moonshiners who were active here during prohibition. While I didn’t have a chance to visit the cement tanks near Moonshine Spring that were used to make the moonshine, I was finally able to visit and photograph the narrow slot that makes up part of this canyon.
