Fall Colors on the Grand Mesa 2025

After Work Adventures | Tuesday, September 23, 2025

I’m not going to have very much time to chase fall colors this season, so I decided to head up onto the Grand Mesa after work this afternoon to spend a few hours seeing how the colors were coming along so far this year. I’m glad that I did since the colors were almost at peak and looking pretty great just about everywhere I went, including at my favorite overlook at Skyway Point. I also took a chance exploring some new areas that I had never been to before and found some nice patches of colors along the way. It was a nice way to spend a few hours until sunset this evening!

As I entered the Grand Mesa National Forest I could already see that the colors were looking great!

There was construction near Spruce Point and traffic was stopped at a one-lane section of the highway, so I snapped this photo out of the window while I was waiting.

Once I was beyond the construction I stopped again for a photo of this colorful slope of the Grand Mesa near the White Slide.

I eventually made it to my favorite overlook at Skyway Point and the colors were looking pretty amazing! I think I timed this visit just about perfectly!

After enjoying the view from Skyway Point for a little while, I headed out to explore a new part of the Grand Mesa away from the main highway and hoped I’d find some more colors along the way.

I found some nice colors around Cottonwood Lake below the north face of the Crag Crest.

Then I drove into Webb Flats where I found some great patches of color.

It was a nice afternoon for a colorful fall drive as I made my way back to the highway.

I returned to Skyway Point shortly before sunset, but a large and dark cloudbank had moved into the sky above and blocked a lot of the light, so I concentrated on more distance scenes that were still in the light.

Then I continued down the highway and stopped above Mesa Creek.

While I was stopped at the overlook above Mesa Creek the sun briefly dipped below the cloudbank into a gap above the Mesa.

I made one last stop near Spruce Point for this view over Coon Creek before returning home.

It’s all about timing with fall colors, and I’d say that you hit those perfectly!
