After spending Saturday morning on the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon, I left home early on Sunday so I could meet up with a friend in Green River later in the afternoon. Since I had plenty of time before we were supposed to meet I thought it would be a good idea to spend the morning searching for new rock art sites in the Book Cliffs as I slowly made my way to Green River. Unfortunately, the weather would not cooperate with those plans today thanks to the stormy weather we’ve been experiencing lately and just as soon as I neared the edge of the Book Cliffs it started to rain pretty hard which made the roads I wanted to drive slick and muddy, so I had to turn around and find some better roads. I did my best to get around in the wet conditions, but I ended up spending most of the day just revisiting sites I haven’t been to in a while. I guess I’ll have to come back to search out the new sites when it’s a bit drier out. In the meantime, here are a couple photos I took during the day…
A faint rainbow appeared above the Book Cliffs as early morning storms moved into the area which would alter my plans and stick around for much of the day.
The clouds did add some nice dappled light to the landscape, though.

Faded Red Pictographs
White Rainbow Panel
These tiny pictographs were found at the lower edge of a very large boulder.
Mining Shelter Pictographs
Red Fremont Pictographs
Fremont Petroglyphs over Barrier Canyon Style Pictographs
I stopped to revisit this well-known Barrier Canyon Style panel.
Collapsing Stone Cabin
The wash coming out of Sego Canyon had water flowing down it just like all the other washes I had come across today.
After meeting up with my friend at Ray’s Tavern in Green River for a while, I headed outside of town to find a campsite for the night just as the light was looking very nice on the Book Cliffs.
I found a campsite near the old Utah Launch Complex just as the sun was setting.
Have you been to Castle Gardens in Wyoming? Incised shield prairie style. We spent a part day and all night there and were the only ones. Unfortunately they are surrounded by fencing due to vandalism. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, just last summer. It was a very depressing site. https://adventr.co/2023/08/wind-river-country-and-the-absaroka-range/
