An Unexpected Surprise

San Rafael Swell Rock Art IV | The Unexpected Panel
Sunday, June 19, 2011

Originally this hiking trip in the San Rafael Swell was put together to so that I could meet up with my friend Philippe while he was out on a long trip to the Southwest, but it ended up being a very memorable and unique experience for me. I usually try to do a little research and planning when I am going to be exploring a new area, but other than knowing the general area we would be in, I left all the planning up to Philippe. On top of that, I knew we would be making a loop out of the hike, but I didn’t even know how long it would be. It turns out that we hiked about 12.5 miles round trip. Luckily, everything worked out great in the end! Our goal for the day was to find and visit four different rock art sites along the way, but unfortunately we only found one of those four. However, we did end up stumbling upon a different Barrier Canyon Style pictograph site that we were not expecting, which was very exciting!

Three Fingers to Temple Wash

San Rafael Swell Rock Art III
Saturday, June 18, 2011

This Saturday I was going to meet my friend Philippe from France at Goblin Valley in the evening. That gave me all day to do some exploring on my own along the San Rafael Reef. I started out driving south from I-70 along the Reef to Three Fingers Canyon. I hadn’t been there in a year or two and I wanted to get some better photos of the petroglyphs.

Long Weekend in Chaco Canyon | Sunday

Sunday, June 12, 2011

On Sunday morning I slept in just a little bit later than on Saturday. It was not because I wanted to, but because I was planning on photographing through the doorways of Pueblo Bonito during the early morning light. The park would not be opening the gates until 7:00am, so there was no use in getting up earlier than I had to. I arrived at the locked gate to the park a few minutes before 7:00am in hopes that it would be opened early; it wasn’t. Someone didn’t come to open the gate until about ten minutes after 7, which means I was sitting in my Jeep anxiously waiting the whole time. Once the gate was finally open, I drove straight to Pueblo Bonito and hiked to the doorways so that I could start shooting. I didn’t have much time before the sun would be too high in the sky.

Long Weekend in Chaco Canyon | Friday

Friday, June 10, 2011

Amanda found out pretty last minute that she was going to have a three day weekend from work and she wanted to go somewhere new. I gave her a couple of suggestions for places I wanted to get to this year that we had not been to yet, and she agreed that we should head down to Chaco Culture National Historic Park (just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?) for the weekend. I quickly secured that Friday off from work and our weekend plans were made!
