I made a last minute decision this evening to head on over to the Book Cliffs to try and photograph the sunset. Shortly before sunset I hopped in my Jeep and drove north to the base of the Book Cliffs until I found a spot I liked. Then I hiked up the foothills a short distance to get a higher vantage point. Finally, I waited for the sun to take care of the rest. Here’s three photos I took before heading home in the dark.

After spending much of the day exploring Montezuma Canyon I headed over the border into Colorado and found a campsite in the Canyon of the Ancients National Monument. Then I made my way over to the Holly Group of Hovenweep National Monument.

During our second night camping at Chimney Rock there was much less wind, and I ended up sleeping a lot better. When we woke up in the morning it was also a bit warmer and the wind had completely disappeared. The first thing I did was grab my camera and take a few photos as the sun came up.

As you might have seen in this post before I left on this trip, there was some real concern about the government shutting down and closing Canyonlands National Park. The night before I was set to leave, I stayed up to see what was going to happen in Washington. Luckily, at the last minute they figured out the budget and averted a shutdown. Of course, my time would have been better spent sleeping, but at least we did not have to make any last minute changes to our plans and we would still be able to explore The Maze District of Canyonlands for a few days.

On Saturday, Amanda and I headed down to Moab to search out some new petroglyphs along the Colorado River, plus to revisit some that we’ve been to many times before. It always seems that no matter how many times I visit these areas, I always find something new. Here’s some photos of just some of the petroglyphs we found throughout the day.
