Maroon Bells – Snowmass Wilderness | Saturday, August 8, 2026

This weekend I had some stuff I needed to get done around the house on Sunday so Diane and I just headed out for a day hike into the Elk Mountains near Marble on Saturday. Typically I only hike into the Maroon Bells – Snowmass Wilderness once each summer, but I guess I have felt like spending more time there this year since this was now my third visit! We left home bright and early on Saturday morning and made our way around the Grand Mesa, over McClure Pass to Marble, and then followed Lost Trail Creek until we reached the trailhead at the mouth of the North Fork. Although it’s been pretty smoky around here lately from many wildfires across the West, the weather forecast was calling for the patchy smoke to clear up after 9:00am and I was hoping that they were correct.

Garfield Basin: Center Park Trail to Tungsten Pass

High Uintas Wilderness | Saturday – Monday, August 1-3, 2026

After spending Friday evening at a concert in Salt Lake City, I was up early on Saturday morning to meet up with Jared so we could head over to the Uinta Mountains and go on a two night backpacking trip into the High Uintas Wilderness. We had tried backpacking along the western end of the Highline Trail last summer from Hayden Pass, but that trip didn’t work out as planned because there was a brand new wildfire that altered our initial plans and then we encountered plenty of deadfall across the trail from an older fire that made the hiking difficult. We were hoping not to repeat that kind of trip again this year. After looking over maps I thought Garfield Basin looked like it would be a relatively easy hike to a large basin that is mostly above treeline and wouldn’t be too busy or impacted by previous wildfires, so that’s where we decided to go. As an added bonus, we would be able to briefly connect up with the Highline Trail near the top of the basin and visit a pass or two while we were up there.

Jackass Pass: Beaver Basin to Dry Peak

La Sal Mountains | Saturday, July 4, 2026

After spending Friday morning hiking around Cleveland Gulch in the San Juan Triangle, I returned home later in the afternoon and got a really good night of sleep and then had a nice relaxing morning on Saturday. I was well rested and feeling like I should go on a short day trip up into the La Sal Mountains since I hadn’t been back to that range in over two years and really wanted to get up there again this summer. After checking the smoke forecast earlier in the morning it looked like the smoke was supposed to mostly clear out in the afternoon, so I left home after noon and made my way through Unaweep Canyon to Gateway and then followed the backroads up into Beaver Basin to start the short hike that I had in mind. I had actually planned to hike from Beaver Basin with Jackson and his family in June of last year, but ended up having issues with my Jeep when we arrived and decided it would be best to turn around and head home before we could begin, so I was happy to finally return!

Leon Peak: Returning to Mesa County’s Highest Point

Summer Solstice on the Grand Mesa | Sunday, June 21, 2026

After going on a nice overnight backpacking trip into the Flat Tops Wilderness with Jackson, I returned home on Saturday afternoon to spend some time with our new kitties. Then on Sunday morning Diane and I drove up onto the Grand Mesa so we could hike to the summit of Leon Peak, which at 11,236 feet is the highest point in Mesa County, since she had never been up there before and I was interested in returning again since the last time I was there was about twelve years ago. The area was very busy when we arrived at the trailhead by the Weir and Johnson Campground, but it seemed like everyone else was there to fish and spend time by the water because we saw no one else along the route after leaving the lakes behind.

Fringes of the Raggeds: Yule Pass to Daisy Pass

Raggeds Wilderness | Friday – Sunday, September 5-7, 2025

This weekend I returned to the Elk Mountains near Crested Butte so I could hike up to two passes in the Ruby Range that have been on my to-do list for far too long, both of which are found along the fringes of the Raggeds Wilderness above the Slate River Valley. Even though I didn’t have the best experience trying to find a campsite near Crested Butte back in July, there are still a lot of places in the area that I want to hike and explore so I decided to give it another shot after Labor Day weekend, which seemed to work out much better this time. As usual, I left from work on Friday afternoon, stopped for a quick dinner in Delta and then took the Kebler Pass Road over into Crested Butte and followed the Slate River up to the Paradise Divide where I found a campsite for the night. It started to rain on and off while I was driving over Kebler Pass which would keep up throughout the rest of the evening. Once I was settled in at camp I spent the remainder of the evening wandering around Paradise Divide when it wasn’t raining.
