On Saturday morning Amanda and I headed down to Silverton. After setting up camp we made our way down the road that leads from Silverton to Animas Forks that we have traveled many times before. In the past we have explored a bunch of the side trails off of this road (Cunningham Gulch, Eureka Gulch, Picayune Gulch & Placer Gulch), however there were a few that either I have not checked out before, or that were blocked by snow when I attempted them. Our goal for this day was to check out the rest of those trails.

I wanted to get out with my Jeep for a few hours today, and ended up exploring an area of the Book Cliffs I have not been to before, just west of the Colorado/Utah state line. The roads were easy, but the scenery was great, and I didn’t see another vehicle the whole time.

Our original plan for today was to head on over Baxter Pass and explore the Book Cliffs. However, with all the rain we have been getting lately, the Uncompahgre trails were very muddy when I was up there yesterday and I’m sure the Book Cliffs would be the same. Plus, the Baxter Pass trail has some really nasty mud when it gets wet, so we decided to hold off on that one and wait until it dries out.

Yeah, I ended up spending some more time on the Uncompahgre Plateau today since I wanted to stick close to home.
I started out on Delta and made my way to Escalante Canyon on the Escalante Rim trail. From there I took the Dry Mesa trail up onto the Uncompahgre. When I reached Divide Road my plans were to explore some spur trails off of the main road, but it seems there has been a lot of rain up on the plateau lately because all of the trails were very muddy and slick. I decided to skip the exploring until it dries out up there again (maybe in the fall). On my way back home I explored a few short spurs along Highway 141 that went off towards East Creek.
