The Monument and The Mesa

Sunday, September 20, 2009

Amanda and I spent the day yesterday with my sister and her husband. We started out in the morning hiking at the Colorado National monument and then we took a drive over the Grand Mesa. It rained a lot during the day, but luckily it seemed that every time we were out side hiking or doing something else, we got lucky and the rain was stopped. I didn’t end up taking many photos, but here’s a few that I did take…

Hiking the Monument with my 50mm

Sunday, August 23, 2009

On Sunday I decided to do some local hiking at the Colorado National Monument. I left home without much of a plan, and when I got to the park I decided to hike to Devils Kitchen…then a little bit of No Thoroughfare Canyon. Finally I took the short Otto’s Trail to an overlook of Monument Canyon. I have been meaning to use the 50mm Canon lens I bought at the beginning of the year more, however I always seemed to lazy to change lenses. To force myself to try using this lens more, it was the only lens I brought for my camera on this short trip. It was definitely weird for me to not be able to zoom in or out. Anyways, here’s some of the photos I took during my hike with the Canon ‘nifty-fifty’ lens 🙂

Geostash Challenge 2009

Friday – Sunday, August 14-16, 2009

After being home for only 4 days (all of which I had to work) from my 9 day Colorado Adventure, I headed to northern Utah to spend the weekend at the NAXJA Intermountain Chapter’s Geostash Challenge. I’ve wanted to attend this event the last two years it was held, and finally decided I would drive up for it this year, even if I could not stay longer than a standard weekend (I didn’t want to take any more time off because of my previous week off). For those that are not familiar with this event, it’s basically like a poker run. In order to get your cards you need to find hidden geocaches that you are given the coordinates for. You need to find at least five of the hidden geocaches to get one poker hand. When you get back to camp for the dinner, the hands are analyzed and the best hands win some prizes. Since it’s put on by a Jeep club, the caches are hidden along 4×4 roads with some short hiking required to reach some.

Red and White Mountain

Colorado Adventure 2009 | Day 9
Sunday, August 9. 2009

The final day of our trip was a short one. I had been away from home for 8 days, and had a lot of stuff I needed to get done before heading back to work. We decided to run Red and White Mountain along with Piney Lake Road before heading home. It was an easy trail that wouldn’t take us very long, plus it was right near I-70 on our way home.
